“No Suits, No Slides!” Welcomes Former BLS Head William W. Beach

Today’s post comes to us from Brandon Bielich, managing editor of The Workforce Institute at UKG, and it previews a new, three-part episode of the “No Suits, No Slides!” video series featuring advisory board member John Frehse.

It’s back! Our “Leadership in the Labor Shortage” series — more commonly known as “No Suits, No Slides!” — has returned, featuring a special three-part conversation with our most fascinating guest yet: Dr. William W. Beach.

Bill is the former Commissioner of Labor Statistics and led the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) from March 2019 to March 2023. He served under two U.S. presidential administrations and, most notably, during the COVID-19 pandemic. When it comes to the labor market, Bill’s obviously seen a lot — and now he’s sharing his insights with The Workforce Institute at UKG.

As always, Bill’s joined by our No Suits, No Slides! co-hosts John Frehse, senior managing director at Ankura, and Dave Gilbertson from UKG.

Part 1: The Collapse of the Labor Market

John, Dave, and Bill discuss the current trajectory of the U.S. economy and labor market. Bill shares his expertise on the economic outlook, how to navigate these uncertain times, and much more. They explore key findings from the BLS’s labor market report and navigate their thoughts for a successful future.

Part 2: The Day the Labor Market Blew Up

In the second installment of this three-part episode, the trio talks differences between an economic collapse and a recession, and looks at the pandemic’s effect on the labor market. Bill shares his own personal experience of running the BLS during an unprecedented time, including the challenges of collecting data, and more.

Part 3: Inflation, Jobs, and the Economy: What We Know

Rounding out the conversation, Bill, John, and Dave chat about how data produced by the government moves policy within the United States, as well as the perception vs. reality of a recession and inflation. Bill answers key questions regarding the current state of the economy, what he anticipates will happen next, and how he managed the BLS labor market report.
